[DIY]: Holographic Moxi Jack Backstay

Add some sparkle to your skates! This tutorial will focus on how to paint Moxi Jack backstays, but this holographic technique can be applied to ANY leather or vinyl skate boot. Check out my post here on how to prepare any skates for painting.

Thank you to @junikorn for your inspirational post. I would have never thought to try this otherwise.

You will need…

1. Prepare Your Skates

  • Cover the areas surrounding area in painter’s tape.
  • Deglaze the backstay. Generously apply Angelus Deglazer to the leather with cotton balls, to remove any gloss so the leather absorbs paint better. Work in a well ventilated space. I even wear a respirator. Make sure the deglazer doesn’t drip onto the skate hardware. Allow it try dry fully before moving on to the next step (~15 minutes).
  • Working with a vinyl skates? Check out my post here on more information on how to appropriately prepare your skate.

2. Paint a Base Layer

  • The base color will determine the final color. I used Angelus Pearlescent Sterling Silver for a silver holo effect, but you can use any of the Angelus Pearlescent colors — or even mix your own if those available shades don’t suite you! @inlebloom created her lilac base by mixing Angelus Prince Purple with Angelus Sterling Silver.
  • Paint on a thin layer of your base color. Dry completely with hair dryer. Repeat several times till you have a solid base layer.

3. Paint on the Holo

  • Mix 1g of holo pigment with about 1oz of Angelus Neutral. Mix well.
  • Paint a thin layer of holographic pigment to your skate. Dry with hair dryer.
  • Repeat repeat repeat. I lost count of how many thin layers I put on, but it was at least 10.
  • Applying thin layers and drying them fully in between applications is key! 🔑 Thicker layers are more prone to cracking, so keep them as thin as possible. Thin layers will also prevent the glitter from clumping, allowing for the best holo effect.

4. Finishing Touches

  • Apply a thin layer of Angelus finisher. Dry it completely with hair dyer. Repeat at least one more time.
  • Allow to sit for 48 hours and enjoy!
